Daniel Weiss, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Psychology and Linguistics | Ph.D. 2000, Harvard University
I completed my Ph.D. studying how long distance contact calls are produced and perceived by cotton-top tamarin monkeys. For my postdoc, I focused on human research, studying how infant and adult learners acquire language. During my time at Penn State, I have combined those interests, taking a broad approach to comparing cognitive and communicative abilities across species. When I’m not working, I enjoy photography, creative writing, running, and whitewater kayaking.

Graduate Students
Amy Lebkuecher, M.S.
M.S. Psychology, 2019, The Pennsylvania State University | M.S. Psychology, 2015, Lehigh University
I am a Ph.D. student in the cognitive psychology program. I received my Bachelor’s from East Stroudsburg University and my Master’s from Lehigh University where I conducted research on bilingual syntax and lexical choice. In addition to bilingual language use, my other research interests include the connection between motor and language planning and how the common system between the two is affected in clinical populations like multiple sclerosis.

Natalie Awad Schwob, M.S.
M.S. Psychology, 2019, The Pennsylvania State University | M.S. Integrative Biology, 2017, Kennesaw State University
I am a graduate student in cognitive psychology. I did my undergraduate in psychology at the University of Georgia and my masters in biology titled, “Language prerequisites in Pan: Orofacial-motor and breath control in chimpanzees and bonobos” at Kennesaw State University.
I am interested in the evolutionary origins of language, language mechanisms, and doing comparative work with nonhuman primates and young children.

Allison Link, M.S.
M.S. Psychology, 2021, The Pennsylvania State University | B.A. Psychology, Spanish Language & Literature, 2019, Stony Brook University
I am a graduate student in the cognitive psychology program pursuing a dual-title degree in Psychology and Language Science. I completed my Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Psychology and Spanish Language & Literature at Stony Brook University in 2019.
My research interests include investigating statistical learning in bilingual speakers and examining how monolingual and bilingual speakers learn grammatical classes.

Undergraduate Research Assistants
Sylvia Rudnicki
I’m a sophomore majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders and minoring in Psychology. After Penn State, I plan to pursue a clinical doctorate in Audiology. I became a part of this research lab because it combines my interest in psychology and language.
In my free time I think about what assignments I’m forgetting about while I watch Netflix.

Mia Anthony
I am currently a junior studying Psychology with a focus in Life Science. I joined the Language and Cognition Lab because of my interest in statistical learning and language development. I plan on attending graduate school to earn a master’s in counseling, with hopes of becoming a therapist specializing in adolescents and/or eating disorders. I love this field and all of the extensive opportunities that are available within it. In my free time, I enjoy drawing and also spending time with my younger sister.

Isabella Parrillo
I am a freshman majoring in psychology with an interest in an anthropology minor. I joined the Language and Cognition Lab because of my fascination with primate behavir and learning about their cognitive processes. In my free time i enjoy baking (and eating) cakes as well as sailing.

Xinbing Zhang
I’m a junior double majoring in Computer Science and Psychology with an interest on applying machine learning in neuropsychology and cognitive psychology. I plan on attending graduate school to learn more about neuroscience and artificial intelligence and hope to work on things that combine both fields. I joined this lab because I’m very interested in how acquiring a second language influence pattern learning. In my free time I enjoy watching soccer and playing with my dog.

Camila Gonzalez
I am currently a senior majoring in psychology with a focus in neuroscience and a minor in biomedical engineering. I joined the Language and Cognition Lab because I have always been intrigued in language acquisition. I have always wondered about the cognitive processes that occur in bilingual speakers versus monolingual speakers. As someone that is bilingual, I thought this lab provided me a unique insight of my own brain and cognitive processes and combined my interests with language and neuroscience.
